MLM commission testing should prove that approved product-sale rules produce the expected result, handle corrections and do not pay twice after a retry. Use a small set of fictional records with independently checked expected outcomes. Test the calculation, approval and payment-reconciliation stages separately.
Testing verifies implementation against a specification. It does not establish that the compensation policy is lawful or commercially sound. The business should obtain appropriate legal and accounting review before developers implement that policy.
Freeze the policy used for the test
Assign a version and effective date to the written rules. Define qualifying sale status, exclusions, period boundaries, rounding and the handling of cancellations. Resolve ambiguities before running acceptance tests.
Keep expected results outside the production calculation code. If the test derives its answer from the same faulty logic, it may confirm the mistake. Have an authorised business reviewer approve the worked examples.
MLM commission testing cases to include
| Case | Expected evidence |
|---|---|
| Ordinary eligible sale | A trace from sale and rule version to the calculated entry. |
| Cancelled or ineligible sale | The documented exclusion and an understandable reason. |
| Partial return | The adjustment required by the approved policy, linked to the original record. |
| Period boundary | Consistent treatment of timestamps and the agreed business timezone. |
| Repeated run | No duplicate liability or payment instruction. |
| Rule change | The correct effective version without silently rewriting earlier history. |
Check amounts and rounding explicitly
Agree the precision used for calculations and when rounding occurs. Test small amounts and boundary values. Rounding each line can differ from rounding a final total, so the policy must specify the intended approach.
If the system handles more than one currency, identify which currency each record uses and how any approved conversion is recorded. Do not combine unlike amounts into a single unexplained dashboard total.
Test reruns and interrupted processing
Stop a test run partway through and resume it in the test environment. Check that completed entries are recognised and unfinished entries remain visible. A retry should not create another payment instruction for the same approved item.
Test duplicate import files and repeated payment-provider notifications. Record identifiers that allow the system to recognise an event already processed. Include an operator procedure for resolving uncertain outcomes.
Reconcile calculation, approval and payment
A calculated amount, an approved amount and a paid amount are different states. Reconcile them using stable references. Include failed, pending and returned payments rather than treating every exported line as settled.
Check the finance export against the detailed ledger. Totals should be explainable from their components, including adjustments. Give reviewers access to the evidence they need without exposing unrelated personal information.
Keep the evidence with the release
Record test inputs, expected results, actual results, defects and retest outcomes. Identify the software version and configuration. Retain a compact regression set for future policy or code changes.
The NIST Secure Software Development Framework is a reference for incorporating security practices into development. Calculation acceptance tests should be accompanied by appropriate access-control and security checks, rather than being presented as a complete security audit.
Common questions
Is one successful calculation enough?
No. Returns, thresholds, dates, retries and changes can expose errors that an ordinary example misses.
Should we test using real payouts?
Use a controlled test environment and fictional records for acceptance testing. Keep real payment release under the business’s authorised process.
Who approves the expected results?
An accountable business or finance owner should approve the policy examples independently of the implementation.
