Direct-selling software requirements should begin with genuine product sales, customer service, accurate records and a reviewed compensation policy. The system needs to connect orders, payments, returns and authorised commission calculations. A member registration screen and a network diagram are only a small part of an operating business.
This guide covers software planning for a product-based operation. It does not approve a business model. Obtain qualified Indian legal and accounting advice on the proposed sales and compensation arrangements before implementing them.
Define the operating model before the screens
Document what the business sells, who the customers are and how an order is fulfilled. Explain how direct sellers participate and which events can create a commission under the approved policy.
Keep joining, ordering, earning and payment as separate events. A new account is not a product sale, and a calculated amount is not proof that payment has reached its recipient. The data model should preserve those distinctions.
Direct-selling software requirements to document
| Area | Requirement to define |
|---|---|
| Products | Catalogue, applicable prices, stock, fulfilment and product information. |
| Customers and sellers | Separate roles, permitted access and approved onboarding records. |
| Orders | Order status, payment reference, delivery and cancellation history. |
| Returns | Requests, decisions, refunds and any related calculation adjustments. |
| Commissions | Versioned rules, eligibility, review and reconciliation. |
| Support | Complaint ownership, progress and a traceable response history. |
Turn approved policy into testable rules
Give developers written calculation examples and expected results. Define the relevant sale status, timing, rounding and treatment of returns. Resolve ambiguous wording before coding the payment workflow.
India’s Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021 prohibit pyramid and money-circulation arrangements under the guise of direct selling. Software functionality does not establish that a proposed plan complies with the rules.
Ask advisers to review the applicable rules and amendments for the actual operation. Keep their approved requirements separate from the developer’s technical acceptance checklist.
Connect the records needed for investigation
Staff should be able to move from a commission entry to its calculation run, policy version and underlying sale. A return or correction should leave an understandable trail instead of silently changing the earlier result.
Define export formats before launch. Finance and support teams need usable records, including identifiers and statuses, rather than screenshots of dashboard totals. Test an export with a small sample before importing live data.
Give each role the access it needs
Separate customer support, finance, catalogue management and system administration. Decide who may change rules, approve adjustments and release a payment file. High-impact changes should have suitable review and recorded ownership.
Protect personal and payment-related information in screens, exports and logs. The fact that users appear in the same network does not mean they should see one another’s private records.
Require a complete trial before launch
Run a fictional order from purchase through fulfilment, return, calculation adjustment and reporting. Include a duplicate payment notification and a failed export. Check that staff can identify and resolve exceptions.
Agree who monitors the system, maintains backups and tests restoration. Document the handover and support arrangement. Launch readiness includes the people who operate the software after the development team finishes.
Common questions
Is a network tree enough to define the system?
No. It describes relationships, but not product operations, approved calculations, customer support or recordkeeping.
Should the developer choose the compensation policy?
The business and qualified advisers should approve the policy. Developers need unambiguous requirements and expected test results.
Can software guarantee a compliant launch?
No. Compliance depends on the business model, conduct, products, documents and ongoing operations as well as system controls.
