Binary, matrix and unilevel software differ mainly in how they represent seller relationships and apply configured calculation rules. The structure name does not define a complete compensation policy or demonstrate legal compliance. Compare the actual data relationships, eligibility rules, adjustments and reporting requirements.
This is a technical comparison for a product-based direct-selling business with an independently reviewed policy. It is not a recommendation to pay for recruitment or a forecast of participant earnings.
Separate relationships from compensation
A system may record both the person who introduced a seller and the seller’s position in a configured structure. Those relationships are not necessarily identical. Decide which relationship each report and calculation uses.
Document whether a relationship can change and how historical calculations remain reproducible after a change. A visual tree alone cannot explain which version applied to a past transaction.
Binary, matrix and unilevel software structures
| Common label | Typical representation | Questions for the specification |
|---|---|---|
| Binary | A placement structure with two child positions at each node. | How do placement, eligibility, period boundaries and any approved carry-forward rules work? |
| Matrix | A structure with configured width and depth limits. | What happens when positions fill, and how are placement and historical relationships recorded? |
| Unilevel | A sponsor hierarchy that can include multiple direct relationships. | Which levels matter for an approved calculation, and what eligibility conditions apply? |
Vendors can use these labels differently. Treat this table as a starting vocabulary and require the supplier to demonstrate your written rules. Do not assume that a familiar label makes two products equivalent.
Specify every rule that affects the result
Describe the qualifying product-sale event, exclusions, timing and rounding. If the reviewed policy contains caps, thresholds or period-based conditions, define their exact meaning and order of application.
Clarify how cancellations, partial refunds and late corrections affect an earlier calculation. The same relationship structure can produce different results when these rules differ.
Use a small worked demonstration
Create fictional sellers and product orders with expected outcomes approved by the business. Include an incomplete record, a return and a relationship change. Ask the supplier to explain each calculation using the underlying records.
Use the same scenario for every product. Compare traceability, exception handling and correction effort. An attractive network animation is less useful than being able to explain a disputed entry.
Review administration and historical changes
Restrict who can change relationships or calculation settings. Record the previous value, new value, effective date and authorised reason. Keep a review process for changes that affect financial records.
Ask whether staff can reproduce an old calculation using its original inputs and policy version. A supplier should explain how upgrades preserve that history rather than overwrite it with current settings.
Keep policy review independent of the structure
The 2023 amendment to India’s Direct Selling Rules defines a network of sellers in relation to consideration from selling goods or services. A software structure label is not legal approval for a remuneration arrangement.
Ask qualified advisers to assess the actual policy and business conduct. Give developers the resulting requirements and prevent unauthorised configuration changes from undermining them.
Common questions
Which structure guarantees the highest income?
None. A data structure does not guarantee sales, earnings or business sustainability.
Can a system support more than one structure?
Some products can, but each supported policy needs its own specification, controls and test evidence.
Can we change the structure after launch?
A migration may be possible. Review historical records, participant communications, calculation effects and legal requirements before changing it.
